The Screamer is the boss character for the Ballistic Trauma level of The House of the Dead: Overkill. She is the second boss in the game.

History[]

Screamer Concept Art

Concept art

The Screamer is first scene in Ballistic Trauma's opening cutscene, suspended in a large tube of liquid. Throughout the level, she can be seen stalking the players throughout the hospital, randomly popping up in various windows and peering through certain doorways. During these 'cameos', the Screamer cannot be harmed, nor can she harm the players. In the Director's Cut version, she gets two more dedicated cutscenes, one where she ambushes the protagonists and knocks them briefly unconscious (the encounter differs between both the original Wii version and the Extended Cut), and another where she takes down a helicopter on the hospital roof by screaming at it (in the original Wii version the helicopter seemingly crashes of its own accord).

She is finally fought and killed by Washington and G. in a flooded operating theatre. After she dies, a cell phone which was implanted in her rings; G answers it and is greeted by Papa Caesar, who reveals that he has planted explosives in the hospital.

Appearance[]

The Screamer is a female zombie wearing a hospital gown. Beyond the normal zombie disfigurement, she has a powerful build (standing taller than both Detective Washington and Agent G), an enlarged, protruding spine which forces her into a hunched posture, and an unhinging jaw. She has greatly enhanced vocal capabilities, being able to kill a man and even take down a helicopter by screaming at them. She also has unexplained ghost-like powers, being able to teleport and move around extremely quickly, and spawn zombie reinforcements out of nowhere.

Battle[]

Original[]

Despite the pre-fight visual saying her weak points are her head and crotch, the Screamer's actual weak point is the left side of her stomach, which is circled during the actual fight. She'll use the following moves:

  • The most common attack is a simple charge. Screamer will spawn on the opposite side of the room and attempt to rush the player, and will quickly side-step along the screen as she takes damage. If the player fails to cancel the attack she will get in their face and grapple with them, and the player will be prompted to waggle the Wiimote to shake her off before she can scream.
  • Screamer will appear in the middle of the room and spawn doctor zombies, who will immediately rush the player. The doctors will spawn continuously until either her attack bar is depleted or she damages the player with a scream and vanishes.
  • Three nurse zombies and the Screamer will appear, briefly shuffling positions and giving the player several seconds to cancel her before she crawls at them and claws them. Regardless of whether or not Screamer is cancelled, the nurses will attack upon conclusion of the attack.

Extended Cut[]

The Screamer has somewhat more difficult attacks in Extended Cut, and teleports around with disorienting flashes of light. This is compensated for by no longer having a specific weak point. Getting hit by certain attacks will result in a fairly lengthy cutscene where she reaches "through" the screen.

  • Screamer will walk at the player from the other side of the room, teleporting left and right as she takes damage. Unlike the Wii version there is no opportunity to shake her off if she gets close.
  • Screamer will spawn several zombies in front of her, who shield her and encroach the player. Unlike the Wii version only one wave of zombies will spawn, but they can be fairly numerous and Screamer will teleport around the arena as she takes damage. The zombies are despawned when the attack bar is depleted.
  • Screamer will quickly teleport at the player accompanied by false, translucent copies of herself. They will pause in front of the player, who must quickly identify the real Screamer and shoot her.

Trivia[]

  • The Screamer is a reference to the game F.E.A.R.: First Encounter Assault Recon, which features a similar ghost girl antagonist who stalks and jumpscares the player via hallucinations. Several scenes such as the one where Screamer appears in the elevator are taken directly from this game.
  • The cutscene that plays when she crawls through the screen in Director's Cut is a reference to "The Ring."
  • There is an unused cinematic showing her rolling in a wheelchair towards the screen before a jumpscare occurs.
